Mr and Mrs Cook were in the early planning stages of their ambitious house extension in Newport when they contacted Your Space Living for the first time. They already knew about Schuller kitchens and the reputation they have for style and quality. The task for Your Space Living was to come up with a design that delivered on several specific criteria. This was a wide spacious area that was separated into zones for cooking, working, eating and reading. Mr and Mrs Cook have a strong sense of style and a desire to blend sixties chic with contemporary design. The consultation period for this kitchen took place over a one year period, whilst the development went through planning and building. By the time it was ready for the installation, we were chomping at the bit to get going. Everyone was absolutely delighted with the result.
Mr and Mrs Cook needed a large open plan kitchen and living area. They planned to spend much their time in this space and wanted it to perform various functions. The design of the room needed to incorporate a reading area, where Mrs Cook could relax with a good book. Beside that was space for a very groovy dining table set. On the other side of the room, near to the kitchen area, we designed a drop down worktop that doubled as a truly functional desk.
Our new kitchen extension was part of the total renovation and reconfiguration of our 1920's bungalow, Taking in the whole of the back of the bungalow the double height space, featuring lots of glass, was zoned into four areas, kitchen, dining, relaxing and a small 'study' feature. As fans of mid-century modern design we already had a clear idea of how we wanted it to look and the colours we'd like to use, We were immediately attracted to Schuller kitchens with their clean lines, fantastic storage and possibilities to deliver the rather 'quirky' style we wanted. Our first encounter with a designer had been disappointing but a late night internet search led us to Your Space Living.
We were amazed to receive a reply back from Jo just minutes after our initial enquiry - the time was 11.20pm!. Two friendly emails later and we'd set up a meeting for the following day at her studio in Llantwit Major. From the outset Jo immediately understood what we were trying to achieve and her skill both as a kitchen and furniture designer shone through. By the end of the first meeting we'd more or less decided on exactly what we wanted. After discussion with our architects Jo quickly came up with our design which remained virtually unchanged. None of us could have envisaged at that stage it would be almost a year before the kitchen would finally be in place. Even when a date for fitting had been agreed, unfortunately the extension was not really ready with both wall and floor finishes to complete. However Jo and her fitting team did a fantastic job, working around the problems to complete the installation within five days. The huge Corian work top and gorgeous teal glass splash backs were then fitted to complete the look. We have fantastic storage, a sleek functional working kitchen, a highly individual 'study' space created by extending and dropping the Corian to a lower level to form a desk and stylish open shelving in the seating area. The whole design is brought together with pops of the teal blue colour on our wall cupboards and behind the shelving. With our mid-century furniture and artwork in place the ideas we shared with Jo at our very first meeting have all sprung to life.
Throughout the long build Jo has become a friend, meeting all the problems head-on with a positive and reassuring manner. She comes highly recommended both by us and our son and daughter-in-law who also have a gorgeous Schuller kitchen designed by Jo. We love the wonderful space she has helped us create as does everyone who sees it. Can't wait now to see the designs Jo is working on for our grandsons' bedroom!Mr and Mrs Cook, Newport, South Wales
